Cats and dogs evolved from desert hunters and working wolves โ€” both with a weak thirst drive. That is why hydration first is a rule, not a suggestion.

Why daily water changes matter

Water sitting for a day collects dust, food crumbs and biofilm โ€” the slimy film bacteria form on bowl walls. Pets smell it even when we cannot, and many simply drink less. Less water means more concentrated urine, a major risk factor for urinary crystals and kidney strain, especially in cats.

The 3-step daily routine

  • Change water once or twice a day, even if the bowl still looks full.
  • Wash the bowl with dish soap at every change; run it through the dishwasher weekly.
  • Place bowls away from food and litter โ€” cats instinctively avoid drinking near waste.

How much is enough?

Roughly 50 ml per kg of body weight per day โ€” about 250 ml for a 5 kg cat. Wet food and water fountains help reluctant drinkers. If your pet suddenly drinks much more or much less than usual, call your vet.

Clean bowl, fresh water, twice a day. It is the cheapest health insurance you can offer.
